Dubbed the 'Pearl of the South' by tourists, Phuket is Thailand's largest and wealthiest island.  Famed for its long sandy beaches, Phuket also boasts other great though lesser known scenery - rocky beaches, limestone cliffs, forested hills and tropical vegetation.  Make sure you try the great seafood that is available all over the island.  Unlike other Thai islands, such as Koh Samui and Ao Nang, Phuket is more of a tourist destination which means that there are a lot more activities available to travellers who want to do more than work on their tans on one of the many beaches.  If you're after some action, try diving and snorkelling (Phuket is one of the world's top 10 dive destinations), yachting, sea canoeing or cycling.
